DUBLIN TO HOST 2017 OPENING ROUND OF VIKING STREETVELODROME SERIES
As part of Bike Week 2017 Dublin City Centre, Dun Laoghaire and Blanchardstown will all play hosts to the opening weekend of the 2017 Viking StreetVelodrome TV Series, the world’s most accessible cycle sport.
CUSTOM HOUSE QUAY WILL PROVIDE THE STUNNING BACKDROP TO ROUND 1 OF THE VIKING STREETVELODROME SERIES
The main televised event will take place in front of Custom House on Sunday 11th June. This will be supported by fringe events held in Dublin’s Smithfield Square (12th June), Millennium Park in Blanchardstown (13th June) and at Dun Laoghaire library grounds (14th June).
StreetVelodrome is a unique cycle sport concept which brings all the theatre and drama of Olympic style track cycling right into the heart of the communities it visits using an innovative pop up velodrome.
IRISH MOUNTAIN BIKE RACER MICHELLE MULDOON WILL BE RACING FOR THE HOME TEAM AT ROUND 1 DUBLIN 11 JUNE
The Viking StreetVelodrome TV Series is a touring pro / am competition which sees six pro teams and twelve of the best elite pro riders competing for gold, silver and bronze medals at events held across the UK and, for the first time, the Republic of Ireland. The races are fast and furious head to head pursuit battles lasting just 30 seconds which are guaranteed to thrill to cycling fans as well as those new to the sport. Those attending the free event should lend their support to local pro team, Team Dublin, who will be competing in every round of the 2017 Viking StreetVelodrome TV Series.
Representing Team Dublin will be elite racers Glyn O'Brien and Michelle Muldoon. The team will be sponsored by VisitDublin.com
But StreetVelodrome isn’t just about the pros. Local amateurs can enter the races too and here’s the best bit, its completely free. Everything is provided, you just register online and turn up. Bikes, helmets and professional coaching is all provided. The amateur races will offer the chance to be invited to compete at the SuperFinals, the climax to the TV Series, which this year will be held in Canary Wharf, London on 10th August.
WHICH TEAM WILL WIN IN DUBLIN: SHARKS V TIGERS ROUND 1 11 JUNE
The event at Custom House will also see children’s racing for 3 to 11 year olds in the awesome Sharks v Tigers competition. Exciting young local cycling talent will also be showcased in the DeNovo NexGen Series for 12 to 16 year olds. Both competitions are completely free to enter and all equipment and coaching is provided.
The events are being held in partnership with Dublin City Council, Dun Laoghaire County Council and Fingal County Council. Whilst the high profile TV Series event at Custom House will entertain crowds of spectators and show off Dublin’s cycling credentials to television viewers around the World, the fringe events will also offer local school children and members of the local community the chance to get on track and give cycle sport a go.
Series Director Carl Thompson comments “We are so thrilled to be bringing the Viking StreetVelodrome TV Series & DeNovo Kids Series to Dublin and the surrounding areas. Ireland has a rich history in cycle sport and a passion for sport generally. That’s why we feel Dublin will be the perfect host city for our opening round of the 2017 series.”
