Amateur Rider Finalists Announced

July 30, 2014

After five exciting rounds of the Sportpursuit StreetVelodrome Series and a total of over twenty hours of qualifying sessions, 150 races and ten medal ceremonies, we have finally made our selection from the 115 Amateur riders who have entered the 2014 series.

Its been a fantastic first series with amateur riders from all walks of cycling taking up the challenge and feeling that StreetVelodrome rush for the first time. We have been mightily impressed with efforts and performances we’ve seen right across the country.

WOMEN’S COMPETITION

Special note worthy performances were from Lauren Higham, the youngest competitor of the series, Lauren qualified in Round 1 Stevenage and battled her way to a bronze medal having won the spectator’s wildcard.

We also salute Sarah Chapman who qualified 5th in Round 2 Ealing. Sarah lost out in a race off with 4th placed rider Julia Wright. Julia won that race and went on to compete in the Series for Team Mad Dog Energy Lemonade. But Sarah, who was one of our more senior entrants at over 50, had recently recovered from a replacement hip and was still daring enough to tackle the banking.

In Round 4 Stockton Juliette Dunn, who had only started cycling two weeks before, managed to qualify and took part in some of the most challenging conditions of the Series with a repeated sprinklings of rain throughout her races. Juliette, despite being focused on not crashing managed to increase her race times by ten seconds by her final race.

However we have had to make a selection and we have taken the best three riders who have achieved both in qualifying and in the heat of the head to head battle. The three qualifying amateur female riders are (in their seeding order):

1. Corinne Moss (Silver in Round 3 Harewood House) riding for Team Mad Dog Energy Lemonade

2. Debbie Smith (Bronze in Round 4 Stockton) riding for Team Mpora Velotec

3. Agata Tamulewicz-Downey (4th in Round 2 Ealing) riding for Cycle Chilterns

The fourth rider will be a wildcard selected from the final qualifying session at the Super Final. They will ride for the series leading team London Cycling Campaign.

MEN’S COMPETITON

And in the men’s competition we have seen some very impressive times and extremely close racing.

At each event the level of performance increases and the competition for the top qualifying positions gets closer and closer. Those that impressed included Ian Carr at Round 3 Harewood House who lost out in his race against commonwealth games medallist rider Ross Edgar, but up to which point was lightning fast around the track.

Also able to take it to the Pros were Jack Pullen (Round 2 Ealing) and Mark Voight (Round 1 Stevenage). But the biggest find awaited us in Round 4 Stockton in young 16 year old Tom Pidcock. Tom topped qualifying with a time even our regular Pro riders struggled to beat. He went on to win a silver medal for Team Mpora Velotec, their first of the series and he became the first male amateur to get to the 2nd step of the podium. Tom was such a cool customer on the track, not phased at all by the competition.

Tom was invited to join us for the final, but due to a clashing date he was unable to make the trip to London. But we acknowledge Tom’s stand out performance and award him the Amateur Rider Race of the Series for his silver medal ride against London Cycling Campaign’s and StreetVelodrome regular pro rider Dave Johnson. Dave admitted after the race “that kid pushed me more than the other Pros!”

Again we have taken the best three riders who have achieved both in qualifying and in the heat of the head to head battle. The three qualifying amateur male riders are (in their seeding order):

1. Jack Ravenscroft (Silver in Round 5 Paisley) riding for Mpora Velotec

2. Rob Reed (Bronze in Round 2 Ealing) riding for Cycle Chilterns

3. Steve Brondel (4th in Round 3 Harewood House) and will be riding for Mad Dog Energy Lemonade

The fourth rider will be a wildcard selected from the final qualifying session at the Super Final. They will ride for the series leading team London Cycling Campaign.

We want to thank all 115 participants in this the first Sportpursuit StreetVelodrome Series for taking part and making the competition such great fun. And in closing we wish our six finalists plus the two wildcards, whomever they may be, all the best in the Super Final on Thursday 7th August.
